Bugleweed 1:2 (Lycopus SPP.)

Description:

Bugleweed is useful for hyperthyroid conditions

Dosage:

2-7 mls per day, 15-40mls per week

Main Actions:

  • Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) antagonist
  • Antithyroid
  • Mild sedative
  • Reduces heart rate

Key Indications:

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Grave’s disease and associated symptoms such as tachycardia, rapid pulse, exopthalmia
  • Nervous tachycardia
  • Specific Thyrotoxicosis with dyspnoea, tachycardia and tremor (BHP)

Major Safety Issues:

  • Pregnancy & lactation – potential antigonadotropic activity
  • Thyroid hypofunction, enlargement of thyroid without functional disorder
  • Cautions: Do not administer with thyroid hormone and may interfere with administration of thyroid diagnostic procedures that use radioactive isotopes. Can cause enlargement of thyroid.
  • Taper dose when ceasing treatment – sudden discontinuation can cause increased disease Sx
